Tree Care Equipment

Types of Tree Care Equipment

There are many different types of tree care equipment used by an arborist to maintain and care for trees.  Everyday tools and state of the art equipment allow the arborist to trim, cut, and climb trees safely.  An arborist must have the knowledge and skill to know which rigging to use to safely climb a tree.   They know the right type of saw needed to ensure that cut limbs and branches fall in the designated area. There are four basic types of tree care equipment.

Rigging Equipment

To climb large trees and remove branches, an arborist needs rigging equipment.  The equipment is used to transport power tools and heavy equipment to the arborist.  Examples are:

  • Rope
  • Slings
  • Friction brakes
  • Rigging plates
  • Carabiners
  • Winches
  • Power pullers
  • Cable hoists
  • Swivels
  • Rigging thimbles
  • Blocks and pulleys

Cutting Equipment

Cutting is required to remove dead or diseased branches and trees.  It is done to avoid power lines or ensure the safety of property.  Some examples are:

  • Chain saws
  • Pruners
  • Hand pruners
  • Tree loppers
  • Wood chippers
  • Axes and wedges
  • Hedge trimmers
  • Hatchets
  • Hand saws

Trimming Equipment

Tree trimming removes excess, dead, or diseased branches safely. It encourages strong growth and improves the health of the tree.  Examples include:

  • Saw scabbards
  • Landscaping tools
  • Pruners
  • Chainsaws
  • Wood chippers
  • Tree loppers
  • Hatchets
  • Hydraulic tools
  • Pole saws

Climbing Equipment

The arborist uses climbing equipment to ensure their safety while cutting or trimming a tree.  Climbing is the most dangerous part of tree maintenance.  Proper and well-maintained climbing equipment is important for preventing a fall.

Examples include:

  • Hardhats
  • Protective goggles or glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Spurs
  • Rope
  • Pulleys
  • Carabiners
  • Protective clothing
  • Helmets
